Tai Chi – a Potted History

Article by Nicki Coyne

Tai chi is an ancient martial art and healing art form originating in China with strong roots in the Chinese Taoism. The actual origin of Tai Chi stems back to times that are now shrouded by legend. The early practitioners of Taoism understood that all life and other matter in the universe consists of energy and this was born out by modern physics when Einstein proved that energy and matter is the same thing. The Chinese call this energy Chi. Other cultures call this energy Ki or Prana and it is a concept that is widely used in martial arts or the healing arts.

For the Chi in the human body to remain healthy, it needs to constantly be moving. Stagnant Chi or blocked Chi leads to illness and disease, an idea that is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine such as acupuncture. Tai Chi was developed to promote the movement of Chi throughout the human body.

Today five main schools or styles of Tai Chi are practised all around the world. These styles are the Chen, Yang, Wu Yu Chian, Wu Jian and Sun.

The Chen style of Tai Chi is now understood to form the basis of all modern Tai Chi styles and it was developed by a family with the name Chen. They lived close to a Shaolin temple and were already known for their skill in martial arts, but began to focus on internalising their training to develop the flow of Chi. The family still travel the world, demonstrating their skill level in this form of Tai Chi.

Another Shaolin Kung Fu martial artist, Yang Lu Chan undertook his Tai Chi training directly from the Chen family, overcoming a number of obstacles in order to do so. He studied the Chen style for many years and passed his skill down to his two surviving sons and his grandson. It was his grandson, Yang Cheng Fu who developed the Yang style that is the most popular form of Tai Chi in the world.

Both the Yang and the Chen styles of Tai Chi influenced the development of the Wu Yu Xian style as its founder who was Wu Yu Xian originally trained with Yang Lu Chan an d later Chen Quing Ping. After a number of years of training he developed his own style, using elements from both of his masters. This form of Tai Chi is not widely practiced outside of China.

In the early part of the 20th Century, after the dynasties had fallen, the Wu Jian style became popular in China when it was promoted by the secretary general of the martial arts association, who had been bettered during a training bout by Yang Chen Fu. It was a form that was developed to accommodate the restrictive movements of the long flowing robes of the Manchurian dynasty. Today it is second in popularity across the globe only to the Yang style.

The last of the five major Tai Chi styles is he Sun style. Like the other four styles it is named after the family that developed it, namely Sun Lu Tang. It is the newest of all the styles and grew from Sun s training in a number of martial arts and the Wu Yu Xian style of Tai Chi. When Sun died, his daughter continued to teach the form in the same way that her father taught her.
