In the recent past, there has been an increased awareness about health and fitness among people. They are joining fitness programs at gymnasiums, dieting centers, yoga classes and health clubs.  But if one is tired of running aimlessly on the treadmill or doing push-ups and sweating it out, and is looking for some new and meaningful form of exercise, there is T’aichi-Chuan, of Chinese origin. If it sounds exotic, well, it is just that. It is exactly like executing a series of seemingly effortless, fluid, ballet-like movements.

Tai chi exercises have been a part of Chinese culture for many years. It is a form of martial art, linked to the ancient Chinese philosophy of Taoism. Tai chi is based on the belief that in order to remain health and fit, one must balance the flow of ones physical, mental and emotional energies within one’s body. It trains both mind and body. In other words, it leads to the development of health, peace of mind and longevity.

Tai Chi exercises also help enhance one’s beauty. They add grace and flexibility to one’s body, and make the skin firmer and tighter, besides making it glow. The soft, fluid, ballet-like movements are designed to strengthen and stimulate the limbs and the internal organs. It gives an overall feeling of well-being. The other advantage is that age is no barrier and neither is space- one only needs enough room to move one step in any direction. The movements are circular. These simple exercise loosen the joints, helps in weight control, improves concentration, strengthen the spine and improve posture. They also calm the mind and reduce stress.

There are different styles of Tâ€aichi exercises- Chen, Yang and Wu. Chen is the oldest form of T’aichi. T’aichi can be done anytime during day and do not strain the body at all. Blending T’aichi with Yoga has its own benefits.

Chinese silk weaving exercises are a part of T’aichi. They have got nothing to do with the silk fabric.  These exercises are gentle and slow. They make one strong and help immensely in maintaining a good complexion. The Chinese silk weaving exercises can be learnt in three weeks and do not tax the body at all.

However, one must remember that fitness and health are not a momentary fad. These twin objectives should be lifelong pursuits because they help you to remain at peace with the self. Therefore, T’aichi must be practiced regularly. What is Tai Chi?

Tai Chi, also known as Taiji and Tai Chi Chuan, is a form of slow motion meditative exercise for relaxation, health, and defence. It is originally practiced by the Chinese people with a mixture of both Taoism and Martial Arts. Tai Chi means the Supreme Ultimate Force/Boxing which refers to the Tao. The Tao, in turn, specifically talks about the dualities of the Yin and Yang.

The movements, proper shapes for the transmission of energy, patterns of breathing like single-weightedness, the techniques of relaxation and breath control are all necessary for the dynamic forces and the art itself. Cheng, Yang, Wu, and Sun are the major Tai Chi styles.

Basically, Tai Chi is a meditative exercise as well as a form of martial arts. The benefits of Tai Chi include reducing anxiety by relaxation and gentle exercise, improving the lung function by utilization of diaphragm, calming the nervous system, enhancing the function of internal organs, building internal strength through proper breathing and strengthening the immune system. The Basis of Tai Chi

Tai Chi is based on the concept of “chi”, which is the vital force than animates the body. Chinese philosophy and medicine believe that once the person engages in Tai Chi, the aim is the circulation of “chi” within his or her body, which could lead to the person enhancing his or her health and vitality.

The “chi” circulates to the nervous and vascular system which resembles the practice of acupuncture and other healing arts. Another aim is to achieve a calm and peaceful mindset for the person in order to focus on the specific execution of the exercises. Correct execution provides a chance to learn about balance, alignment, fine-scale motor control, rhythm of movement, and different sources of movement from the body’s vital center. It also contributes to better standing, walking, moving, and running.

Studies show that Tai Chi contributes to fighting against shingles. It helps the person’s immune system boost the immunity for a shingles virus.

How is the Virus Triggered?

For the awareness of every reader, shingles existence is triggered by the reactivation of the inactivated Varicella zoster or herpes zoster virus from the nerve tissue of the body from a previous history of chickenpox. The reactivation is due to a weakened immune system that somehow allows the virus to emerge again. It results in the form of shingles with a characteristic of painful rashes with blisters on one side of the body lasting for weeks or months.

According to the National Institute on Aging Director, Richard J. Hodes M.D., the study of Tai Chi, in combination with immunization or vaccination, can enhance the protection of older adults from the painful condition that shingles can cause. The cell-mediated immunity (CMI) to Varicella zoster virus (VZV) helps to determine the risk of herpes zoster. Thus, specific VZV-CMI may provide protection against post-herpetic neuralgia and shingles. A westernized and standardized version of Tai Chi was used in research between the years of 2001 and 2005 with a population 112 healthy older adults aged 56 to 86 years. The study shows that Tai Chi alone generated higher levels of VZV-CMI and levels two times higher when Tai Chi was combined with vaccines.

In summary, Tai Chi has the capacity to boost the Varicella zoster virus-cell mediated immunity of a Varicella vaccine, which, in turn, results in having a powerful and strong immunity against the Varicella zoster virus. When this occurs, that particular person can prevent the occurrence of shingles.
